Dave Barry on Healthcare

Date November 26, 2007

We Americans live in a nation where the medical-care system is second to none in the world, unless you count maybe 25 or 30 little scuzzball countries like Scotland that we could vaporize in seconds if we felt like it.

That sums it up, doesn’t it?

I like Dave Barry, think he is a great writer.

But having lived overseas, I would still prefer to be treated in the States rather than any other country.

This system may not be perfect, but let’s be honest, would anyone travel to any other country for treatment of a serious condition?

    BTW, welcome back Doc.

I live in Canada where we supposedly have the “best” health care system. I will say without a doubt if push comes to shove i would cash in my last pennies and come to the U.S. to be treated if I had a life threatening illness or needed and MRI tomorrow. Here the “”wait list” is 8 months for an MRI and you could die waiting. Not for me…

I’ve thought many of your posts sound like Dave Barry (meant in the best of ways) and now I know: you’re a fan, too.

And I notice that in your absence you’ve been studying orthogonal polynomials. I had to call a former professor to be able to post this.

    Welcome back Doc,
    Have missed your witty posts.
Hmmm, I like living in Australia and I think our healthcare system is ok. It has its downfalls but is any health care system perfect?

BTW; I asked our paed alot of the questions you pondered about patients and doctors being friendly in you previous post and was pleasantly surprised with his answers. He was very open to my queries and very interested to hear of your blog.
Just wanted to say thanks, I think that post has made a difference to our client/doctor rrapport.

Welcome
mad goat

Welcome to my blog. I am a practicing primary care physician in the Southeastern US, caring for patients of all ages (Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics). This blog covers a wide variety of issues, including the following: What it is like to be a physician, dogs driving cars, what troubles are in our system, toddlers with flame-throwers, what would it take to fix that system, llamas, death and dying issues, mutants, and accordions. Maybe I need to write about mutant dying accordions with flame-throwers. Hmmm....I feel a post coming. Anyhow, I like variety. Life is always lived with both laughter and tears. If you are a regular reader of this blog, it is also filled with nausea and nightmares. Thanks for stopping by. -Dr. Rob
