What a pleasure to read your post, and how true it is! All ages have their very own special things to share with us if we will only see them. I'm a senior and thankfully still working full time as a business broker but I also have a wonderful doctor like you. Thank God for people like you and my doctor and all the many other people in the medical profession that remain caring. I don't know how you guys do it but I treasure you.

Rob, because you are willing to buy in to continuity of care across various ages and stages, you are rare and will be much sought-after, especially in the service of Children with Special Healthcare Needs (CSHCN).

Such children need the Medical Home approach. "Tranisition" (from pediatric providers to adult docs) for CSHCN is a huge issue--and your viewpoint solves that problem perfectly.

This was utterly sweet and touching. More patients need to see this side of doctors.

Thank you for this post. I'm having a difficult time starting my personal statement to apply to med-peds residency, and you've given me some stuff to think about. (Not that I'm going to copy what you wrote, but it's giving me some inspiration.)

Add obstetrics and you'll have the spectrum covered! Doing OB and gyn (as Family Docs do) is a great way to get those young adults into your clinic. It seems impossible to get young adult men to come in, though (maybe Med-Peds-Texas-Hold-Em would help with this).

I keep trying to nudge my 19-year-old daughter away from her pediatrician (who's cared for her since she was a chubby 9-month-old), but she's fiercely loyal. She was there for strep throat last winter and sat in the waiting room with babies and toddlers. I suspect a lot of your patients develop that kind of loyalty.

I grew up in a small city in West Virginia. Dr. Rose delivered me and years later showed up in the ER on weekends when I broke my arm or gashed my eyelid. He also treated my middle-age parents.

But only if you wore them with black pants and shoes.
:)
Lovely post. Your patients are lucky you have a distractible mind.
