[...] As promised, I am continuing these letters - I know I sometimes get side-tracked, so thanks for your patience. As you know, I am a primary care physician in private practice, so what you do with healthcare really matters to me. Not only does it affect my personal livelihood, but it greatly affects the patients I see every day. I see the uninsured, underinsured, people losing their jobs, people on Medicare or Medicaid, and everybody in between. So I write this letter not only as a plea to you for my profession, but as a person with a vantage point few enjoy. And I do enjoy being a doctor - something that cannot be said for all of my colleagues - and want to be practicing for years to come.
shoot, Dr. Rob,

my own baby brother has black teeth snapping off in his mouth (and they HURT) but he has no health insurance. He is over 40. He has three kids. A whole lot of their family health care plan has been "don't get sick".

He has worked HARD all his life but has lost 3 jobs in the past decade -- all formerly family-owned businesses that went corporate and re-located to China.

Hoping President Obama DOES socialize medicine. Hoping he appoints my brother or someone else who has gone with untreated strep, unmedicated toothache to a cabinet appointment.

love to you and all doctors and health care providers for all you do but damn, there are so many people YOU DO NOT SEE and who never would show up at an ER. No matter what... no matter about all y'all's yelping about uninsured showing up at ERs

I really don't see the objection to PHC that is free at point of use, provided the PHPs receive fair remuneration taking into account their training debts. The "use will expand" argument hinges on the fallacy that people will get ill just to get free healthcare.

The alternative, as Dr Rob has already highlighted, is that the genuinely poor are turned away, sometimes by doctors who they've been happy with for many years.
