I actually called several organizations and volunteered to go. I speak Haitian Creole and now that I work ER have a more flexible schedule. They said "no thanks." Right now they only want trauma surgeons or docs with significant disaster relief experience. If I just landed in Haiti with a stethoscope with no medical infrastructure I would just be another mouth to feed in Port-au-Prince right now.

I anticipate once things get more stabilized I'll get a call and go over to help, but for now the take home message is: send money. The right organizations are on the ground and what they need are resources not people.

Great post. Another organization that is helping by providing medical supplies is Direct Relief International (directrelief.org). They are a four star rated charity by Charity Navigator. They were also providing medical aid in Haiti PRIOR to the earthquake.

From their website:
“100% of funds donated for Haiti will be used exclusively for programmatic activities related to Haiti. None of the funds donated for Haiti will be used to pay for fundraising or administrative expenses, or for programmatic activities in other places. Direct Relief is able to do this because fundraising and administrative expenses are being covered by the proceeds of a generous bequest received three years ago.”

Nice to see you put this up.

Your thoughts remind me of the firefighters here, that wanted to help in the NYC aftermath of Sept. 11. The town refused to let some of them go. They were needed here as well. All of them wanted to rush in and help; you couldn't be in a helping profession and not feel that pull to go. The men and women left were still called upon to extricate the wounded from MVAs, fight the fires, backup the surrounding cities, and prepare for an event here. No one knew, after all, where else they might strike at that point and time.

Some of us just have to hold the fort. It's every bit as important to do. People are depending on you. You never know what could happen here for that matter. Hopefully, we are all trying to help in whatever way we can. Together it can make a huge difference.

For your readers wanting to verify IMC's charity status, here's the review from Charity Navigator. Don't set up efforts to collect material goods (shoes, clothes, etc.) money is what is needed.
