in The Healthcare Problem

In response to my past two ennui-ridden posts, I got several comments asking the question, what can we do? Ellen asked this: Now that I read your blog, I once again wonder what I can do. I do believe the public is sick of the “lying sacks” – which is what my daughter calls politicians. I [...]

“It will never happen.” “They know better than to do it.” “They realize the disaster it would be if they let it pass.” That’s what I hear.  I hear that the upcoming SGR adjustment, the one that will cut Medicare reimbursement by 23%, won’t go through.  In case you missed it, the SGR is a [...]

Caring

in American Medicine, Being a Doctor, Rants

The “empowered patient” movement (which I think is a good thing) strives to take the doctor out of the center of care and put the patient at its focus.  The role of doctor is not to be the star of the show, the quarterback, the superhero, but the advocate and helper for the patient to [...]

Last Thursday (9/16/10) I had the pleasure of attending a conference on Attention Deficit Disorder.  The following are my two interviews.  They are both very interesting, and both apply greatly to my practice as a primary care physician. The first is Dr. Ari Tuckman, author of the book More Attention, Less Deficit, as well as [...]

Heidi goes to the dark side

One of the rock solid things in life has always been the neutrality of Switzerland. I go to bed much easier at night knowing that at least there is one place where war is not the solution to problems. This has changed in a very saddening way: Swiss accidentally invade Liechtenstein Fri Mar 2, 10:01 [...]

Physical Exam: Hip Hip

Having gotten (literally) to the end of the upper extremity (what civilians call the “arm”), we now leg down to the lower extremity.  Technically, we are dealing with the transitional zone between leg and torso: the hip. Hip, not hip or hip Now, the word “hip” creates quite a bit of confusion.  I know many [...]

Lessons in Perseverance

I wanted to quit. He wanted to quit. Yet we were 2 miles from our destination.  It was raining, windy, and cold.  I could see in his heavy steps that this was no longer a fun time with Dad.  It was no longer the romantic idea of "roughing it" in the wilderness; it was now [...]

The man who twirled with rose in teeth Has his tongue tied up in thorns His once expanded sense of time and Space all shot and torn See him wander hat in hand – “Look at me, I’m so forlorn – Ask anyone who can recall It’s horrible to be born! -Bruce Cockburn, from song [...]

Credit Colds make me uncomfortable.  Yes, I am uncomfortable when I have a cold, but that’s not what I am talking about.  I am uncomfortable when people come to the office for a cold.  It’s a very difficult situation for a doctor. Are you kidding?  What could be easier than a person with a cold? [...]
